Referencing electronic sources is one of the more challenging areas of APA. Here are some online resources that focus specifically on this topic.\n* [[APA Style Electronic Formats|http://www.westwords.com/guffey/apa.html]] by Mary Ellen Guffey. First published in Business Communication Quarterly, March 1997, pp. 59-76. Latest revision of this online version: 2006.\n
APA referencing is concerned with how resources that are used in a paper are documented. This is often one of the more challenging areas of APA formatting, as there are such specific rules for formatting. \nCommon questions include: \n* Is it one space after a period? \n* Do I put all the sources I read for a paper in the reference list or only certain ones?\n* How many authors' names go in the reference?\nIf you have these or other referencing questions, you may find the APAReferencingWebsites link of interest. I'll also develop some additional links for specific questions (with related answers)!

The APA organization has developed software that assists with implementing APA style rules. The [[APA-Style Helper version 5.1|http://www.apastyle.org/stylehelper/ver5/]] @ $34.95 conforms to the current APA style manual. It is designed to run on a single computer and provide guidance on:\n* FormattingPages, \n* FormattingReferences,\n* FormattingHeadings, and \n* more.\nYou can download a trial version that allows you to see the full functionality of the program with "less output options" according to the website. Before making a purchase, make sure to use the trial version and see if it works for you!\n> Beware: The site cautions that this version does not work with Microsoft Word 2007!\nThere are other products claiming to do the same thing as APA's software. Before purchasing any of these, it is important for you to explore how usable and intuitive they are and whether they actually conform to the APA style manual. It may be worth some time to review it, even though the products that Dr. Stoner reviews have gone through additional iterations and development since 2001.\nNote that there are also APATemplates that you may find to be useful in lieu of the following software programs. Templates are forms created by someone to meet a need for routine formatting using a particular style. APA templates, therefore, are pre-existing document forms that help users format documents in APA style. Some templates are rather basic, while others include more detail.\nYou still need to know APA style fairly well to effectively use most templates. Some people find templates less useful than (a) using an APA formatting software program or (b) learning APA and using the APA style manual.\nIf you'd like to see some APA templates, merely do a search for "APA templates" and you will be rewarded with many "hits" for your review!

Students often wonder why faculty are so "picky" about APA formatting. I'm sure students use words other than picky ... words like fastidious, fault-finding, finicky, fussy, and persnickety come to mind.\n\nAPA style has specific rules and faculty are most emphatic about making sure the rules are followed. But why? How does it make you a better ___ ___ (fill in the blank - healthcare provider, sociologist, psychologist, teacher, etc...)?\n\nRemember that I'm in the health sciences profession. As a nurse, one of the things that I was told in my basic nursing program and that I have recalled during my practice days is the old saying that that "if it wasn't charted, it wasn't done." What's that got to do with APA formatting you ask?\n\nWell, if I did something and didn't chart it, that was pretty sloppy. It required those who came after me to try and sort out "did she do it or did she not." That's not a good thing. Those coming after me had to take things on faith ... or re-do something ... when they shouldn't have had to do that. Things weren't understandable when material was not in place (like charting about a medication given or a newly initiated treatment).\n\nAPA formatting is somewhat like that. As a paper's author, whether it's a brief class paper or a thesis or dissertation, if you don't adhere to formatting conventions then it's pretty sloppy work. Even if you've spent hours and days and weeks on the paper!\n\nIt takes longer for those who read your work to understand it and make sense of it. You and your readers may be unable to understand where your great ideas stop and someone else's neat ideas begin. This is not good, as you could end up being accused of PlagiarismIssues!\n\nAPA formatting is very specific. But the rules are understandable and you can get good at using APA style. It's the primary style for much of the formatting of papers in the social sciences. Learn it early and that part of your learning is done - rather like learning how to use a computer or a PDA. Learn it and use it and you'll find that your paper is much more likely to be read and understood. There will be fewer questions, fewer points deducted for formatting issues, and overall your work will be better received.\n\nWhat other analogies can you think of?
